Daniel finds out that the girl in the picture is Penelope, Carax's girlfriend, who comes from a higher class family, after visiting Carax's childhood home, Daniel takes with him a letter that was sent to Carax from Penelope. As he reads the letter he realizes that her family does not like her relationship with him, and that Carax left Barcelona chasing his dreams of becoming a writter. Daniel visits the Adaya residence (where Penelope once lived) and realizes that the house has been abandoned. He interogates a gardener and George, Penelope's brother is now in Paris, and that many of the people in the neighborhood were unaware of Penelope's existence. A few days later, Daniel decides to pay Nuria a visit, although they talk only about Carax, Daniel gets a strage feeling of attration towards Nuria, and nearly kisses her, but she stopped him. He leves her home with a new information about Carax and heads to the University where Bea, Toma's (Daniel's best friend) sister, awaits him for a date.

What do you think Daniel felt towards Nuria? Why?

After being beat by Neri, Daniel runs out the house, book in hand, and walks throught th pouring rain, a bum on the street, Fermin Romero de Torres, he claims to be a detective and helps to keep Daniel away from the rain. When the rain stops Daniel leaves, headed towards The cementary of forgotten books there, he meets up with Isaac the man in charge and Isaac takes him in. He tells Isaac what is happening and Isaac decides to talk to Daniel about Julian Carax, Daniel doesn't find out much more about what he already knows, however he does find out of someone that might be able to tell him more, Nuria, Isaac's daughter. Daniel then hides the book in the cementary and goes home. When he gets home he notices the gift his father had bought him was still sitting on the table nicely wrapped. He walks to it, opens it and realizes that it is the pen that he had begged his father for when he was younger. He smiles and goes off to bed.
How would you feel if you were Daniel, to open up the present and discover that it was the pen you had begged for before? Would you feel guilty for walking out on him in the first place?

The story just keeps getting better and better, for the readers at least, because Daniel seems to be suffering now more than ever. On his sixteen birthday, a day to celebrate and be happy with those whom you love, Daniel's life goes completely wrong! He throws a small party in which he only invites four people, his father, Mr. Barcelo, Bernarda and Clara. He was very exited, however that excitement went quickly away after he found out that Clara and Mr. Barcelo would not make it. He left the house filled with anger and completely forgot about his father and the present that his father had bought for him. It was raining outside but Daniel didn't care. He just walked and walked when suddenly he noticed that someone was following him. The man following him offers him a thousand euros for the book but Daniel refuses his offer so the man threatens Daniel. Since the book now belonged to Clara, Daniel runs to her house to try and save Clara from that man, but unexpectedlycatches Clara and her music teacher commiting adultary. Neri, the music teacher, beats Daniel and forbids him from ever coming near Clara again.

Why do you think the man is so interested in the book? Who do you think he is? What do you think he will do to Daniel if he doesn't give him the book?

The relationship between Daniel and Clara keeps growing, it seems as if the only thing keeping thyem apart is the age difference. They go out alomost every day and according to Daniel, they talk about everything. One of the topics that he mentions that caught my attention was that of a stranger that has approached Clara on various occasions. He seems to know a lot about most of the people that are close to Clara and Daniel. Could this be Clara's dad? or even Carax in search of his novels? Is this the same guy that was spotted outside of Daniel's window?

Just when I think the book can't get any better it does! As the story goes on the relationship between Clara and Daniel seems to be getting better and better, on the other hand there is not much talk about the relationship of Daniel and his father. A lot of new facts are learned about Julian Carax and now I'm almost as intrigued as Daniel to find out more about him. Every character seems to be searching for the truth behind Carax, yet everyone seems to have a different version of the story. It's funny because the story seems very confusing yet i understand it perfectly.
Daniel arrives at home one day and decides to sit in front of a chair as he daydreams about spending the following day with Clara, suddenly he spots a man outside watching him. The scene reminded Daniel of one of the scenes from Carax's book but he puts the incident aside because of his excitement for spending time with Clara the next day.
Who is the man outside the window? Do you think he will play a role in the story later on? or was he just in Daniel's imagination?

As the story goes on Daniel continues his search of the author's life. He meets Clara a beautiful elder women and although she is blind he decided to try and impress her by dressing up in his best clothes. As he continues his quest of both the author and of Clara he becomes a burden on his father and their relationship changes drastically. Daniel also reminisces over his career goal as a child, of becoming a novelist due to his lefestyle. He continuaously mentions writting with a pen as to assure that he is certain and that he knows exacly what he wants in life. He tries to convince his father to remarry but his chooses not to so their relationship suffers even more. Why do you think Daniel wants his father to remarry? Why doesnt his father want to?
